Everything you need to know about protection against the intrusion of solid and liquid bodies as well as the sealing of your product.
What is the IP standard?
The IP standard is an international standard abrogated by the International Electrotechnical Commission for the purpose of calculating the tightness of products. The IP standard, which stands for Index of Protection, was published in 1989 and was used by the European standard EN 60529 to classify the degrees of protection provided by electrical equipment and products.
How is the IP Protection Index of electrical products calculated?
The protection index analysed for each product is expressed as a two-digit number, the first ranging from 0 to 6 and the second from 0 to 8 in France. The first digit calculates the level of protection of the product against solid elements, while the second represents the level of protection against liquid elements.
We will now explain each number and its meaning, both for solids and liquids.
The 1st number: Index of Protection against solid elements :
0 ⇒ This figure indicates that the product is not protected against solid elements at all.
1 ⇒ This indicates that the product is protected against solid elements larger than 50mm such as unintentional hand contact.
2 ⇒ The number 2 indicates protection against solid elements larger than 12.5mm, such as the size of a finger of the hand.
3 ⇒ This fourth indicator indicates protection of the product against solid elements larger than 2.5mm, such as contact with a tool or screw.
4 ⇒ Indicates protection against solid elements larger than 1mm, such as a very thin tool or wire.
5 ⇒ This means that the product is protected against dust and harmful deposits.
6 ⇒ This last indicator means that your product is fully protected against solid elements and dust.
The first number is very important and allows you to be sure of the resistance of your product to solid foreign bodies.
The 2nd number: Index of Protection against liquid elements :
0 ⇒ This indicates that your product is not at all protected against liquid elements.
1 ⇒ The number 1 means that the product in question is protected against vertical drops of water such as condensation.
2 ⇒ This indicator means that your product is protected against falling water drops vertically up to 15°.
3 ⇒ This fourth indicator means that your product is protected against water and rain up to 60° from vertical.
4 ⇒ The product is protected against liquid splashes in all directions.
5 ⇒ This indicator means that the product is protected against splashing water from the hose in all directions.
6 ⇒ The number 6 means that the product is fully protected against splashing from large bodies of water.
7 ⇒ This indicator means that the product is fully protected against the effects of immersion to a depth of 1 metre for a period of 30 minutes.
8 ⇒ This last and most important indicator means that your equipment is fully protected against the effects of prolonged immersion under specified and specific conditions.
This second figure for the IP protection rating is reserved for the protection of your product or electrical equipment against liquid elements.
This indicator of protection against solid and liquid elements is present on all products and equipment in order to ensure that you can use these products in certain specific situations and thus fully meet your needs.
Index of Protection | Protection against Solid Elements | Protection against Liquid Elements |
0 | No protection | No protection |
1 | Protection against solid elements larger than 50mm | Protection against waterfalls similar to condensation |
2 | Protection against solid elements larger than 12.5mm | Protection against falling water at 15° from the vertical |
3 | Protection against solid elements larger than 2.5mm | Protection against water and rain at 60° from the vertical |
4 | Protection against solid elements larger than 1mm | Protection against liquid splashes in all directions |
5 | Protection against dust and harmful deposits | Protection against splashing water with a water lance |
6 | Total protection against all solid elements and all types of dust. | Protection against splashing from large amount of water |
7 | X | Protection against the effects of immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes |
8 | X | Full protection against the effects of prolonged immersion to more than 1 meter under specific conditions |
Products meeting this standard proposed by Proteclight.
Proteclight, our sales website for signalling products for professionals, offers a very wide range of approved and tested products for protection against solid and liquid bodies. Here is a small overview of the tested products proposed by our site.
LED area lighting.
This zone lighting allows a wide area of intervention to be illuminated. Very luminous, this zone lighting gives a luminous power of 1450 lumens and is composed of 18 white leds. This luminous device provides 60° lighting to cover a large work and intervention area. Thanks to its aluminium body and polycarbonate lens, this zone lighting complies with IP certification with IP68 protection class, the maximum protection class against solid and liquid bodies.
LED Flashing Beacon 138 mm.
This 138mm high flashing beacon has an ISO attachment to fix it on the roof of a vehicle or on various adapted supports. This flashing light for vehicle has 12 rotating leds and flashes and has a 12-24 Volt bi-voltage power supply. The dome of this product is made of polycarbonate and the base is made of aluminium. These two components allow this flashing light to be protected from all foreign solid bodies such as dust and water, with a possible immersion up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes with IP67 protection.
Angle Directional Warning Light:
This angle directional Warning light allows a very efficient vehicle signalling thanks to its 12 orange or blue coloured leds to adapt perfectly to your signalling needs. This Angle directional warning light has a luminous angularity of 135° and can be added by four in order to have a luminous angularity of 360°, on each edge of the vehicle. Its power supply is Bi-Voltage 12 / 24 Volts for an average consumption of 0.6 amps. Its solid and liquid tightness indicator is IP67, which makes it waterproof against all types of dust and water, with a possible immersion up to 1 meter deep for a maximum of 30 minutes.
Most of the products offered by Proteclight are tested to analyse their resistance to water and dust in order to offer you reliable and durable products over time. The IP protection index is an indispensable standard for the majority of signalling products and safety devices.
The IP standard and Proteclight.
The Proteclight team is very concerned about the quality of the products it offers you. This is why many of the illuminated signage products presented on our site have undergone water and dust tightness tests to ensure you a flawless quality and durability.
Do not hesitate any more and come to discover many products totally waterproof and dustproof in the section of your choice, in order to have a reliable, durable and effective luminous signalling.
